There's a fun little tool called "Tweet Effect" which tells you how many Twitter followers you gain or lose for your recent tweets.

It's a great thing to plug in after a Twit-fight!

@Registan_net which is apparently run by Nathan Hamm should likely think a little bit more about their followers lost by intemperate speech on the Internet.

Calling me a bunch of names and saying a bunch of nasty things to me cost them followers 11 times!

To be sure, they gained followers 6 times as well, but some of them were just rubber-neckers. (The tool doesn't show you how many followers and who they are unless you sign up for mailings later.)

The red-lined tweets with the down arrows show where Registan_net lost followers and the green and up arrows show where they are gained:

But there's no question that Registan_net only had a net loss by harassing me on Twitter — here's another page of unfollows and follows:

 

It's interesting to see what makes people unfollow you. Sometimes it's news links that make them leave, but sometimes it's the opposite. There isn't always a reason because people hit the ceiling of 2000 in most cases and then have to revise their follow lists.

Joshua Foust didn't have any recent changes, but there's a few things he's said that made people peel off — apparently it's his cooking announcements.
